Enrichment Opportunities For Students With Developmental Disabilities
Housed at Brookdale Community College, the goal of the program is to provide students with academic enrichment and social skills instruction. Ultimately, the class assists individuals with developmental disabilities in becoming accepted contributing members of their communities.
Academic enrichment classes, over the ten-year run of the program, have included the following curriculum offerings: poetry, American history, ancient history, drama, first aid, science and nature, money management skills, self-advocacy, and autobiographical writing.
Social skills classes involve role-playing situations that occur in daily life. Students are given the opportunity to problem solve events that affect their lives on a daily basis. Students also discuss their feelings about living with disabilities and how they overcome the obstacles they come across.
